I have the materials for the combined ops, but it's waiting on a suitable time to play it out. This will be a two-player action, with Paul (Painting Little Soldiers blog) commanding the Azeitonians. Once we've finalised a date, I can outline the OOBs and maps.
Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-64487082949533339302020-06-25T17:13:42.236-07:002020-06-25T17:13:42.236-07:00Great looking game Ion and an entertaining read to...Great looking game Ion and an entertaining read too. As Kev noted, your ships are great.
I presume from your 'worked fine for this action' comment that it was a success as a play-test too? Is it on to a combined ops action then?
All the best, JamesJames Fisherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17897755636246185173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-6015952720948141922020-06-24T17:20:47.653-07:002020-06-24T17:20:47.653-07:00Hi Ross -

I am reminded of the opening yarn of Harry Harrison's 'Stars and Stripes' trilogy, in which Great Britain enters the War Between the States on the CSA side, whereat, upon some atrocity carried out by the British, the CSA promptly rejoins the Union, and GB decides that, now we're here, we might as well get our 13 colonies back ... with interest.

Implausible? Undoubtedly, at several levels. But during the course of this war a sea battle is fought between USS Monitor, and HMS Warrior, in which the latter is defeated, and I think sunk. The British sea captain in this story behaved with the same reckless gung ho bellicosity as my Capt Weatherby Jack. If Harry Harrison thought it made for a good yarn, I could do no less!

But I needed the fight to go this way - it was a play test - just to see what the balance was like in a stand-up fight. At the same time, I didn't intend that there would be any real danger of any vessel being sunk - hence the allusions to weather and time of day. I had stretched credibility enough to get the vessels in that part of the world as it was; no more would be coming...

The question is, how are the Ruberians to come at those ironclads in order to deprive the Azeitonian colony of their services?

Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-77672627881716443122020-06-24T05:46:42.259-07:002020-06-24T05:46:42.259-07:00A good game! If he had taken advantage of his speed and long range, he could probably have sunk or battered the older ships without taking serious damage himself.Ross Mac rmacfa@gmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053555991679802013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-56757040859201396912020-06-23T03:32:05.530-07:002020-06-23T03:32:05.530-07:00Ion,

I had completely forgotten that I had created them! I really ought to write these things down. I have several empty exercise books I can use!

I really have to thank you for your original ideas; I would never have come up with them for myself. That I have expanded upon them is a tribute I think to their remarkable flexibility and adaptability. I'm especially impressed by my being able to fight really big battles on a small table, and no huge numbers of figures. I mean - how many people have 'done' Operation Uranus with 1:76 figures and models on a table not much bigger than 4 foot square?

I probably ought to write an article outlining the places your rule sets have taken me - and I have taken them!

Cheers,
Ion Archduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-18705022934139302172020-06-22T16:43:18.489-07:002020-06-22T16:43:18.489-07:00Thanks, KEV. I've had a copy of GNW for well over a year, but this is the first action I've had using the rule set (slightly modified to 'fit' the vessels I have here). Of course this was very much a play test. The commanders in Table Town are plotting a cutting out or shore landing expedition... They'll have to overcome the ironclads, shore batteries, the local garrison... and a small flotilla of spar torpedo boats...

Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6650770985225450559.post-87923144496222971152020-06-21T23:45:23.760-07:002020-06-21T23:45:23.760-07:00Fantastic game Archduke.
