Comment on 'New Additions'

A time of peace - or, more accurately - of 'Not War'.
IZN Aurora and Radetzky render passing honours
to TNS Turgut Reis. They are, of course, duly reciprocated.

A comment upon my recent 'New Additions' posting remarked on the size of the protected cruiser I had built of the IZN Aurora - based upon a late 19th century Russian vessel of the same name. I thought I would check it out...

So I took  these pics to compare the size of the cruiser with the mighty (pre-dreadnought) battleship IZN Radetzky. The size difference is quite marked. I've added to these pictures the Turcowaz battleship TNS Turgut Reis. It's not apparent in the pictures, but the Turcowaz vessel is very slightly longer than Aurora, and slightly beamier as well.

In my vaguely Greek, Hellenic, Navy, the armoured cruiser Georgios Averof is actually longer than the pre-dreadnought Lemnos. but the latter is a deal beamier. In the time we are dealing with, the type of ship - cruisers, light heavy or armoured; battleships of various kinds - were not all that much a determinant of size. More of an indication of type was the size and type of guns a given vessel carried.

  1. I have a large collection of 1/3000 RJW ships and some of those armoured cruisers are HUGE. I guess they had large hulls to accommodate the coal needed for extended cruising.

    1. I don't seem to recall many posts about naval wargaming in your Blogspot, Martin. Have I not being paying attention? But, I have found, as you say, that some cruiser types are enormous. Conversely, some ARMOURED cruisers were quite small. Of the five armoured cruisers in my collection, there are three such: the two Azurian (French) and the Izumrud-Zeleniyan (Russian). The Turcowaz (Turkish) ironclad battleship is pretty tiny as well (though, for my purposes in the world of Aeryth Chromatica, it counts as a capital ship).
Being so small, but adding in an extra armour modifier of 1.75 (to the Bob Cordery method of evaluating 'Flotation Points), leaves them with much the same protection as their lighter sistren, but their generally heavier main gun batteries giving them a bit of an edge.
      Cheers,
      Ion
